If you've decided to start investing, this is your very first practical step — and the good news is it costs nothing. Before you can buy a share on the Colombo Stock Exchange, you need a CDS account. Here's exactly what that is, what you'll need, and how to get one.
What is a CDS account? CDS stands for the Central Depository Systems — the electronic vault that holds your shares. When you buy shares, they don't arrive as paper certificates; they sit safely in your CDS account in digital form, tied to your name and NIC. Think of it as a bank account, but for shares instead of rupees.
You open it through a broker, not directly
Here's the one thing that confuses beginners: you don't walk into the CDS and open an account yourself. You open it through a licensed stockbroker (or a custodian bank), who sets it up on your behalf. Sri Lanka has around 30 licensed brokers, and choosing one is really your first decision.
When picking a broker, look at:
- Research and guidance — some brokers publish excellent free research and reports. As a beginner, this is genuinely valuable.
- Online trading — most now offer an app or web platform so you can place orders yourself. Confirm they do.
- Service and support — a responsive advisor who'll answer a first-timer's questions is worth a lot.
- Fees — brokerage is broadly standardised, but check for any account or platform charges.
You can hold accounts with more than one broker later, but start with one.
What you'll need
Opening the account is a standard "know your customer" (KYC) process. Have these ready:
- Your National Identity Card (or passport)
- A passport-sized photograph
- Your bank account details (for transferring money in and receiving dividends and sale proceeds)
- Sometimes proof of address (a recent utility bill) and proof of income, depending on the broker
The steps, start to finish
Opening your account
- Choose a licensed CSE broker — compare research, platform, and service.
- Complete the account-opening form — the broker provides it, in branch or online.
- Submit your documents — NIC, photo, bank details, signature.
- Receive your CDS account number — usually within a few working days.
- Fund your account — transfer money from your bank to the broker's client account.
- Place your first order — via the app, the web platform, or by calling your advisor.
Many brokers now offer a fully online opening process — you upload your documents, sign digitally, and never visit a branch. If that matters to you, ask before you choose.
What it costs
Opening and holding a CDS account is free. There's no minimum balance and no annual fee for the account itself. You only pay when you trade — a bundle of charges (brokerage plus CSE, CDS and regulator levies) that comes to a little over 1% of each buy or sell, with a minimum fee per transaction. That's it.
A note for non-residents
If you're a Sri Lankan living abroad or a foreign investor, the process runs through a Securities Investment Account (SIA) at a local bank, which handles the inward and outward flow of foreign currency. The principle is the same — you still trade through a CSE broker — but the paperwork is a little more involved. Your broker will walk you through it.
Once you're set up
That's the hard part done — and it was never that hard. With your CDS account live and funded, you're ready to actually choose something to buy. Before you do, run through our beginner's filter so your first purchase is a considered one, not an impulse.
